Hakka Clan
Community, Singapore
The design for CYA celebrates both tradition and modernity, creating a clear and strong identity for the Clan while leveraging Geylang’s colourful reputation to create edgy and attractive commercial spaces - that we believe will not only be commercially attractive but also contribute towards building an inclusive community in Geylang.
The Clan facilities are brought to the forefront with a distinctive expression of stepped roof forms drawing from traditional Hakka building form but given a modern expression. Natural materials are used to give warmth and tactility to clan activities. Clan members and visitors have a celebrated and direct entrance from the ground level, flanked by gardens.
The Clan sits amidst lush greenery with lush terracing and landscaping, with a landscape replacement area (LRA) of 100%. From an urban point of view - Geylang may end up as a wall of solid 8-storey party wall developments so it is important that the Clan building offers green relief to the street, community and also clan members and visitors. Clan activity spaces such as Multi-Purpose Hall open into greenery and relate closely to nature.
