PARKROYAL Penang Resort
Ballrooms, Malaysia
The Jintan Function Rooms at PARKROYAL Penang Resort are conceived as spaces that embrace the resort’s natural context while celebrating the cultural craft traditions of Penang. The design opens up once-enclosed areas to create architectural promenades that frame views of the surrounding greenery and majestic mature raintrees. These interventions establish a renewed dialogue between interior and landscape, while allowing natural wind flow and cross-ventilation from the nearby sea to enliven the pre-function space with a refreshing coastal breeze. At the heart of the interiors, the ceiling is inspired by the weaving machines historically used by Malay artisans, its intricate patterns are reinterpreted in a contemporary form. Crafted in copper-toned metals, the design provides both warmth and elegance, while the sloping, interlaced forms cleverly conceal building services such as air-conditioning ducts, achieving technical efficiency without compromising beauty.

The walls are clad in fabrics that draw on batik traditions, offering a refined, modern homage to local culture. Subtle in tone and yet rich in texture, they bring softness and tactility to the space. Together, these layered design gestures create a setting that is culturally resonant, naturally connected, and deeply expressive of place.
