PARKROYAL Penang Resort
Ballrooms, Malaysia
The design of the PARKROYAL Penang Resort’s Andaman Ballroom reimagines the traditional black box event space. Guided by the principle of reconnection with nature, the intervention focuses on opening up blockages and framing views towards the surrounding mature raintrees and lush greenery within the resort. A new, dedicated drop-off area establishes a distinct procession sequence, offering guests a sense of arrival that is both refined and purposeful, while separating ballroom functions from the main hotel entrance.
Enclosing walls have been carefully removed to reveal a light-filled courtyard. The ceiling design draws inspiration from vernacular architecture, reinterpreted as a smooth, modern double-tiered timber roof with an elegant oblong form. Suspended at its centre, a constellation-inspired chandelier introduces a touch of contemporary glamour, echoing the expansive night skies over Penang.

The ballroom extends fluidly into the airy courtyard, where mature frangipani trees are adorned with hanging lanterns, creating an intimate and enchanting atmosphere for evening gatherings. The result is a space that balances modern refinement with cultural resonance, where architecture, light, and landscape come together in a timeless celebration of place.
