Fluid Simplicity
Ballroom, Vietnam
The design explores complexity in simplicity, in line with the Pan Pacific brand ethos of understated luxury. What first appears simple to the eye is revealed to be a complex and fluid form drawing inspiration from the city of Hanoi, known for its many lakes and fluid water bodies.
Akin to a pitched roof pavilion, the negative space created by the sloping eaves are cleverly utilised for air-con ducts and services. This allows the apex to achieve greater height, rather than an overall lowered ceiling. Next the apex was undulated - creating a sense of fluid movement in the serene space. The created complex geometries, which could be computer modelled, were difficult to realise on-site with the contractors in Hanoi. We solved this by a simple method - simply setting out the apex (which is level) and pulling strings down to the eaves!
A fibre optic stream was added, offering a modern interpretation to the traditional chandelier that would have crowded the space while reinforcing the overall simplicity and fluidity. A celebratory element is introduced through the carpet, which features vibrant firework motifs. This injects energy and festivity into the space, while paying homage to the otherwise restrained interior palette.
