PARKROYAL Penang Resort
Hotel, Malaysia

The renovation of PARKROYAL Penang Resort is guided by a design philosophy rooted in climate responsiveness, cultural sensitivity, and spatial clarity. Working within the constraints of the existing structure, the project introduces a series of insertions that reframe the guest experience through light, texture, and openness.

Inspired by the resort’s tropical setting, the design avoids enclosing spaces with glazing or mechanical cooling, instead favouring natural ventilation and visual permeability. Architectural elements such as timber screens, vertical fins, and layered volumes define space without disrupting flow, preserving the open-air character of the original resort.

A central motif in the project is the Pinang screen, drawing inspiration from the Areca palm nut that gives Penang its name. These sculptural timber elements modulate light and air while adding depth and tactility to the interiors. Their repeating vertical forms evoke the rhythm of the tropics and reinforce a connection to place.

Through a restrained palette and passive design strategies, the renovation achieves a sense of understated elegance — contemporary yet grounded, refined yet relaxed. It is a quiet celebration of Penang’s natural beauty and cultural identity, offering guests a timeless, sensory experience.
